Examples of ecosystem protection Seawater Desalination Plant in Santa Eulària (Ibiza) Mar de Alborán desalination plant (Almería) ■ A 20% reduction in unregistered water com- pared to the previous year, which means a saving of 300,000 m 3 , equivalent to 120 Olympic swimming pools or 30,000 water tankers. ■ The use of desalinated water has made it possible to stop extracting 1.3 million m 3 from the aquifers, in line with Aqualia’s firm envi - ronmental commitment to the gradual rege- neration of the aquifers. ■ The development of the Mar de Alborán desalination plant, in collaboration with the irrigators of Almeria, will enable the reco- very of the aquifers thanks to the water from the new desalination plant that Aqualia is building. ■ The project includes a renewable energy plant to power the facility, making it more sustainable in order to preserve the environ- ment in which the desalination plant is loca- ted, the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. ■ During 2021, the Andalusian Regional Go- vernment included the Mar de Alborán des- alination plant in the 2021-2027 Hydrological Plan as a source of water supply for the area. Thanks to this and the 20 hm 3 per year that the desalination plant will provide, a more rational management of the water from the wells will be possible, which will enable the recovery of groundwater in the area.
