Technology to preserve the world’s largest source of freshwater: aquifers Aqualia is working on the recovery of the Medina del Campo lagoons (Valladolid). According to current UNESCO data, groundwater accounts for approxi- mately 99% of all liquid freshwater on Earth and accounts for half of all water abstracted for domestic use. For rural areas, groundwater is cru- cial, as more than 90% of the popu- lation in these areas do not receive water through supply systems. Groundwater is decisive for the pro- per functioning of ecosystems, so it is urgent to protect it from overex- ploitation and to use it sustainably in order to survive climate change and meet the needs of a constantly growing population. In this regard, Aqualia has been working for years on the development and implemen- tation of technologies that optimise the performance of the water distri- bution networks and, consequently, favour the recovery of the aquifers, through solutions that guarantee the efficient, safe and environmen - tally friendly supply and treatment of water. Eco-efficiency in the complete water cycle The activities of the complete wa- ter cycle are integrated into the na- tural environment, so that care for the environment is intrinsic to the day-to-day management of these services and requires responsible actions for the protection and reco- very of ecosystems. Aqualia is suc- cessfully carrying out actions ai- med at optimising the management of the facilities and the use of water The company invests in technology and innovation with the aim of achieving efficient water management, and provides administrations and citizens with smart solutions that enable greater control and more sustainable consumption S U S T A I N A B I L I T Y 44 S U S T A I N A B I L I T Y
